چکیده

The load-strain and stress-relaxation behavior of wet rat tail tendon has been examined with respect to the parameters strain, rate of straining, and temperature. It is found that this mechanical behavior is reproducible after resting the tendon for a few minutes after each extension so long as the strain does not exceed about 4 per cent. If this strain is exceeded, the tendon becomes progressively easier to extend but its length still returns to the original value after each extension. Extensions of over 35 per cent can be reached in this way. Temperature has no effect upon the mechanical behavior over the range 0-37 degrees C. Just above this temperature, important changes take place in the mechanical properties of the tendon which may have biological significance. The application of the techniques used here to studies of connective tissue disorders is suggested. Some of the mechanical properties of tendon have been interpreted with a simple model.

Mechanical characterization of collagen fibers and scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Engineered tissues must utilize scaffolding biomaterials that support desired cellular functions and possess or can develop appropriate mechanical characteristics. This study assessed properties of collagen as a scaffolding biomaterial for ligament replacements. Mechanical properties of extruded bovine achilles tendon collagen fibers were significantly affected by fiber diameter, with smaller f...

Low-level mechanical stimulation is sufficient to improve tendon healing in rats.

Treatment of tendon injuries often involves immobilization. However, immobilization might not prevent mild involuntary isometric muscle contraction. The effect of weak forces on tendon healing is therefore of clinical interest. Studies of tendon healing with various methods for load reduction in rat Achilles tendon models show a consistent reduction in tendon strength by at least half, compared...

Electromechanical properties of dried tendon and isoelectrically focused collagen hydrogels.

Assembling artificial collagenous tissues with structural, functional, and mechanical properties which mimic natural tissues is of vital importance for many tissue engineering applications. While the electro-mechanical properties of collagen are thought to play a role in, for example, bone formation and remodeling, this functional property has not been adequately addressed in engineered tissues...

Effect of chemical treatments on tendon cellularity and mechanical properties.

Removal of cells may decrease the antigenicity and risk of disease transmission associated with tendon allografts and xenografts. An ideal cell removal method would not compromise graft structure and mechanical properties. This study compared the effects of three extraction chemicals [t-octyl-phenoxypolyethoxyethanol (Triton X-100), tri(n-butyl)phosphate (TnBP), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)...

Multiscale analysis of morphology and mechanics in tail tendon from the ZDSD rat model of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) impacts multiple organ systems including the circulatory, renal, nervous and musculoskeletal systems. In collagen-based tissues, one mechanism that may be responsible for detrimental mechanical impacts of T2D is the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) leading to increased collagen stiffness and decreased toughness, resulting in brittle tissue behavior. The ...
